26 jan.-2 feb.
Seiji Yoshimura's '爽風' (apparently) meaning 'refreshing breeze'. what can i even tell you about this? beautiful and meditative and transitory and reflective. brings me so much peace to look at.
19-26 jan.
another resource i'm currently using for the EE, but one that interests me more widely... more meaningful items coming soon, i'm sure of it.
12-19 jan.
useful resource for pdfs relating to (trans)gender studies, found while researching for my extended essay. function over form this week, school is making it so...
5-12 jan.
Edouard Boubat's photograph of his first wife, Lella. 'you cannot live when you are untouchable. life is vulnerability.' really shines through this photo for me. just such a beautiful photograph and display of love, throwing oneself into their work and becoming realised through it- existential devotion.
Happy New Year!
first item of 2025, and one that i hope will set a good precedent.
29-31 dec.
the last item of 2024 & my movie of the year... ghibli movies are such comfort to me, and this year i gained a new appreciation for them, especially for Spirited Away. part of this love comes from the understanding it gave me of a scene in puparia, as well as its aesthetics & overall mood. though HMC is a close second, this is my favourite ghibli movie <3
22-29 dec.
i feel that i understand Nola Darling on a spiritual level... to me she's the sort of freedom i'd aspire to if i wasn't grounded in arguably unfortunate realities. seeing such a portrait of female liberty and agency felt meaningful to me, and i've met these men before. more a slow and more real for it piece than a 'seriously sexy comedy' in my opinion, and beautifully executed too.
15-22 dec.
i read this last week and it's stayed with me. Le Guin's writing style really speaks to me, and i appreciate how it progresses as we learn more. of course the ending is one of the most haunting things i've read, and i think about it often. the last section has been copied out into my journal for how much it means to me. such a beautiful piece of writing, and so many questions.
8-15 dec.
'The Cosmonaut Video' from Abigail Thorn. i'd been putting off watching this for a long time, but confronting it was meaningful.
1-8 dec.
my third reread of this book. the first time i read this i was burning candles on my windowsill and it felt more than meditative, revelatory. my copy is well underlined and spine split open.
24 nov.-1 dec.
Oh God, the intro to this feels like breath. like life and carrying on, cool water over healing wounds. one of my favourite bands of all time and quite possibly my favourite bossa song. i'll die and they'll have to play this. from love logic (2009 - forever). shares a name with Lemon Elegy by Kotaro Takamura. a meditative end to november.
17-24 nov.
Sacred Hoop magazine's article on transgenderism in siberian shamanism. i'd researched indigenous siberian tribes a few months ago on a whim, so the coincidence felt meaningful when i had to research gender diversity in the Chukchi tribe for my anthropology class- leading me to this article.
10-17 nov.
Maxfield Parrish's "The Lantern Bearers". a painting i don't completely understand, but that carries a sense of peace and goodness/rightness to me. things feel as if they are exactly as they should be.
3-10 nov.
still taken from vvtobbi's "On Hyunjin, Labor, and Memory" piece and statement for ment magazine. a genuine and ethereal editor whose work is so evocative and meaningful to me, as well as a very interesting magazine.
27 oct.-3 nov.
Singer's 1972 paper in support of effective altruism. i've chosen it because i'll be using it in my next 'document' piece, which should be done before the next item...
21-27 oct.
Tsuchida Bakusen's 'Still Life - Salmon Slices and Sardines". i love this painting in and of itself, but still life is particularly meaningful to me as something domestic and transitory. Bakusen so loved the world he gave his salmon and sardines.
13-21 oct.
another philosophy to build the foundations of seacall's ethos, one that really changed me.
7-13 oct.
the very first weekly item... i've chosen the phrase 'oceanic feeling' since it's particularly apt for seacall's theme, and a key part of the site's ethos.
